What Are Maisonette and Loft-Style Rentals?
Rental properties come in various floor plans, not just the standard flat layout. Two popular multi-level types are "maisonettes" and "loft-style" apartments.
A maisonette spans two or more levels within a single unit and has an internal staircase. Its greatest appeal is the townhouse-like feel, allowing you to use the first floor as a living room and kitchen, and the second floor as a bedroom. Despite being in a multi-unit building, the vertical living spaces are connected within your own unit, making it easier to maintain privacy.
A apartment uses the height of the ceiling to create an intermediate floor space. Typically adding 4 to 5 tatami mats (approximately 66–82 square feet) of floor area, it's used as a bedroom, storage, or study. Under building codes, it's classified as "attic storage" and in most cases is not included in the registered floor area. The appeal lies in its cost-effectiveness—you get additional living space while keeping rent lower.
