Immediate Response Upon Water Leak Discovery (First 5 Minutes)
When you discover a water leak, remain calm and follow these steps in order.
STEP 1: Close the Shutoff Valve and Main Water Valve Turn the shutoff valve (a handle or driver-adjustable valve) located under the sink or behind the toilet clockwise to stop the water. If you cannot locate it, close the main water valve located in front of the entrance or outside the building. The main valve is often located next to the water meter.
STEP 2: Turn Off the Circuit Breaker (If Water Comes Into Contact With Electrical Equipment) If water has reached electrical outlets or light fixtures, there is a risk of electric shock. Turn off the circuit breaker to cut off the power supply.
