The Importance of Maintaining Quiet During Nighttime Hours
In many multi-unit residential buildings in Japan, the period from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following morning is considered "quiet hours." Most residents are sleeping during this period, and noise can quickly escalate into neighbor disputes. In particular, making noise late into the evening can potentially create legal issues.
Noise disputes with neighbors are often difficult to repair. Once you're labeled as "the loud person," it becomes difficult to improve the relationship afterward. Therefore, being mindful of noise in advance is extremely important.
Timing for Noise-Producing Activities Indoors
Appliances such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and hair dryers should be avoided during nighttime hours. Particularly after 11 p.m., this is a time to absolutely avoid. If you must use the washing machine at night, use a quiet mode if available and keep the duration to an absolute minimum.
