Where Should You Report Your Address Change After Moving?

When you move to a new home, updating your resident registration (moving-in notification) alone isn't enough. You'll also need to update your address with your bank, credit card company, insurance provider, and various subscription services.

To avoid problems like important items not arriving at your new address or mail not being forwarded, start the process systematically right after moving in.

First Step: Resident Registration Moving-In Notification

Submit a moving-in notification to the municipal office or citizens' window in the ward/city where your new home is located within 14 days of moving (if your previous address was in a different municipality). If you're moving within the same municipality, you'll submit a "moving notification" instead.

Required Documents

  • •ID documents (My Number Card, driver's license, etc.)
  • •Moving-out certificate (if you're moving from a different municipality)
  • •My Number Card (you'll need to update the address if you have one)

Once your resident registration address changes, you'll also need to update your driver's license address (you can do this at a police station or driver license center).

Bank and Financial Institution Address Changes

You'll need to update your address with all banks and online banking services you use.

How to Update

  • •Major banks: Through online banking or at a branch/ATM
  • •Online banks: Via smartphone app or website
  • •Brokerage accounts: Through each company's website or by mail

If you delay, your bank book and important documents will be sent to your old address. It's more efficient to list all the services you use and then update them all at once.

Credit Card Address Changes

If you forget to update your credit card address, your statements and replacement cards won't arrive at your new address.

How to Update

  • •Most card companies let you update online through their website or app
  • •Some cards require you to call to update your address

If you have multiple cards, prioritize updating the ones you use most frequently. Since you won't be able to use a card if the replacement doesn't arrive at your new address, make sure to update any cards nearing renewal as a priority.

Insurance Address Changes

You'll need to update your address with your life insurance, health insurance, auto insurance, and other insurance policies.

Services to Update

  • •Life insurance (contact your agent or use the company's website)
  • •Auto insurance (contact the insurance company or your agent)
  • •Fire and personal property insurance (we recommend reviewing your coverage to match your new home)

In particular, auto insurance premiums can vary depending on your place of residence. Be sure to review your coverage at the same time you update your address.

Use the Mail Forwarding Service

If you use Japan Post's "moving and mail forwarding service," mail addressed to your old address will be forwarded to your new address for one year (free of charge).

How to Apply

  • •Apply at a post office window
  • •Japan Post's website (e-moving service)
  • •Application forms available at convenience stores

Using this service ensures you won't miss mail from places you haven't updated your address with yet. You can apply from before to after your moving date.

Other Important Services to Update

Don't forget to update these as well.

Administrative Procedures

  • •National Health Insurance (municipal office)
  • •National Pension (municipal office)
  • •My Number Card address update (municipal office)

Communications and Services

  • •Mobile phone/smartphone (update with your carrier via their website or store)
  • •Internet service (contact your provider)
  • •NHK subscription (update via their website or by phone)

Other Services

  • •Subscription services and online shopping sites (Amazon, Rakuten, etc.)
  • •Subscription services (video streaming, music services, etc.)
  • •Update your address at work (may require recalculation of commuting allowances and benefits)

Notifying Your Employer or School

Don't forget to notify your employer of your address change. This is important because your commuting allowance may need to be recalculated and your emergency contact information needs to be updated.

Documents You May Need to Submit (verify with your employer)

  • •Address change form (use your company's format)
  • •Resubmit your commuting allowance application
  • •Update your dependent deduction declaration (for year-end tax adjustment)

If you're a student, you'll also need to submit an address change form to your school's student affairs or academic office.

Create a Checklist to Ensure You Don't Miss Anything

It's not uncommon to need to update your address with 20 or more places. We recommend creating a "post-move to-do list" or similar to track your progress.

High-Priority Tasks (within one week of moving)

  1. Moving-in or moving notification (municipal office)
  2. Bank account and credit card address updates
  3. Mail forwarding service application
  4. Notify your employer or school

Moving can be hectic, but try to update your bank, credit card, and insurance information early to avoid problems like missing important documents or replacement cards.
